Legendary Designer Passes Away: Oscar De La Renta’s Legacy

Having a passion for fashion, this iconic designer provided glamorous gowns to many prominent women. From celebrities to socialites, Oscar De La Renta had an eye for fashion design ever since he left the Dominican Republic to study painting in Spain; however, he became sidetracked by fashion and soon was discovered by the wife of the U.S ambassador of Spain.  On October 20, 2014, he died at the age of 82 in his home of Connecticut, surrounded by family, friends, and “more than a few dogs,” which was said in a handwritten statement signed by his step-daughter and son-in-law, Eliza and Alex Bolen.

Known for his elegant evening wear and elaborate wedding gowns, Oscar De La Renta was one of the few designers who shaped the American style. Grace Liberatore, a Padua freshman, said “Oscar De La Renta’s designs were unique and classy. He was truly a legend.” Recently, Amal Alamuddin had worn a dress designed by the designer while marrying popular actor, George Clooney, according to an article from people.com. De La Renta also provided gowns to Penelope Cruz and Sandra Bullock, two A-List celebrities who wore the intricate designs eminently. Among the political figures, he had designed a striking red gown for former First Lady, Laura Bush, and a golden dress worn by Hillary Clinton in 1997. However, no matter who wore his stunning clothing line, they never failed to impress the onlooking viewers.

Oscar De La Renta had lived his life to the fullest in his own way, topping the best dressed lists and designing the most memorable and extraordinary dresses and gowns. We celebrate his life by honoring him in many ways, along with looking back on his achievements and successes of his career. While he will be missed, his name and designs will live on, inspiring others to follow in his footsteps and continually setting the bar high.
