Blue-Gold Week at Padua Academy has just ended. Even though there were multiple fun activities that took place, including bingo, the bake sale, and a raffle, the true meaning behind the Blue Gold Club may still be unknown to some.

Blue-Gold was originally a football game inspired by the founders of the DFRC, Delaware Foundation Reaching Citizens, Bob Carpenter and Jim Williams. The game was played on August 25, 1956. Carpenter and Williams both had children with intellectual disabilities and wanted to host an event that spread awareness about intellectual disabilities, while fundraising for programs that helped children like their own.

The program has gone even further to establishing over fifty clubs at various schools across the state. These clubs engage in multiple events to help continue spread awareness.

There are still annual football games held at the University of Delaware. Many students participate in the Hand-in-Hand program where they are matched with a child or young adult that had an intellectual disability. They share their Blue-Gold experience leading up to Game Day.

Freshman, Krissy Kanu, who is in the Blue Gold club at Padua, said, “I think it’s such a great club made for an important cause and I’m honored to be a part of it.”

Blue-Gold is a program created by the DFRC, and it started off as a simple football game with a meaning, that blossomed into something far greater and purposeful.
