The subject of high school students seeking out jobs is very controversial. According to Child Trends Data Bank, 46% of students are employed. Some find having a job as a teenager necessary. As we all know, being a teenager can be pricey. In my interview with students, all answered my question, “Why did you get a job?” with the simple answer, “money.” The expenses we have include school supplies, clothes, gas, and events like football games. Some assume that mom and dad would hand over money for these expenses, making jobs unnecessary. However, most teenagers do not want to accept their parents’ money.
Brandi Bey, a senior who works at 9th Street Book Shop, said having a job makes her a more liberated and responsible individual. This attitude is surprisingly accurate of most teenagers, tend to strive for a sense of independence from their parents. What is important to remember is that this independence comes with a price. Megan Dempsey, a senior who has a job at The Columbus Inn, feels her social life is affected by work. She rarely has time for her friends, boyfriend, schoolwork, and job all on the same weekend. Kelly Henry, a junior working at The Country Butcher, agrees with Megan’s sentiment. Working as a teenager requires a time commitment, and teenagers may feel as though they are missing out. Kelly said, “I have to wake up early on weekends, so no social life for me.” A job can cause immense amounts of stress with missing out on social events, and grades can also be negatively affected.
Mrs. Vavala says, “It’s been my experience that teens who work 10 hours a week or more usually end up putting far less effort into their school work than students who do not work at all.” Though having a job while in high school has its obstacles, there are also benefits to consider. Working hard to earn their money is challenging and rewarding experience which has the potential to help teenagers develop a sense of responsibility and become prepared for the “real world.” Getting a paycheck gives teens a feeling of accomplishment and the knowledge that their hard work matters. Having a job as a teenager definitely creates mixed emotions with people, and will remain a popularly debated topic.
