New Kids in School

After being at the top of grade school, students are now back to the beginning, a freshman in high school. This can be a little nerve wracking. In the first few weeks, everyone is worried about getting their locker open, getting to the right class on time, and most of all, finding friends to spend four years of high school with.

Some students might already know their old friends going to high school with them, maybe from grade school or new classmates that were at Freshman Orientation. At Freshman Orientation, students can meet their new classmates and teachers, as well as tour a new school. For people who are shy and find meeting new people a challenging thing to do, try and find a common ground. Maybe they play the same sport or instrument, like the same types of music or just have a few classes together.

After finding new friends, students will learn a few important lessons, time management being the main one. Time management is going to be very important during all the years in high school. After school, everybody has homework, maybe a sporting event, service activity, time with friends, and on top of all of that, need time to yourself.

One of the biggest differences between grade school and high school is the amount of homework given. The homework is given to challenge a student’s knowledge of the topic, to get them out of their usual routine of about an hour’s worth of grade school home work that a student may have had in grade school. To add onto homework load, some schools may require students to participate in at least one extracurricular activity. Whether it’s band, sports practice, or a service project, time is needed to participate in them. By the time any activities are finished, there might not be a lot of time left in the day to spend with family or friends. Though as a student approaches the end of the year, they might start to think,”This year was more work than last year, but it’s all worth it.”
