The Fault in Our Stars

Originally a novel written by the New York Times bestselling author, John Green, in 2012, The Fault in Our Stars was made into a major motion picture and released to the public on June 6, 2014. The movie stars Shailene Woodley as Hazel Grace Lancaster and Ansel Elgort as Augustus “Gus” Waters. Hazel is a sixteen year old living with thyroid cancer and is forced by her parents to go to a support group for kids with cancer. There she meets Augustus, a seventeen old amputee. The movie follows the two teenagers falling in love and going through heartbreak in a tragic ending.

All in all, the movie followed the book, which is a rare occurrence in Hollywood these days. The actors, for the most part, were rather unknown, making the movie more realistic. Fans of the book could not have asked for a better screen adaptation of their favorite novel.

Mary Catherine Lenoir (’15) and her friends went to the midnight premiere on the last day of school. “It was like a dream. A sad, sad dream,” she says. The theater was quiet, aside from the movie and the sobs of the audience. The emotional rollercoaster lasted two hours and six minutes. Despite the tears, The Fault in Our Stars raked in an estimated $48.2 million its opening weekend.
